The Art Of The Snap

I have a simple rule for photography.
Don’t think.
That’s it. I know. Not groundbreaking advice. But I reckon it’s the best advice photographers can get.
Why?
Because photography has become complex. Mirrorless this, and modes for that. Great if you want to be technical. Not so great if you want to take photos that feel alive.
Yeah, I’m a big fan of the snapshot. The camera is generous. One frame provides loads of detail. A picture of a boat on a beach? You get loads more.
The sky and the sea in vivid detail. The beach itself. Textures, shapes and patterns. It’s brilliant.
Why overthink it?
I get it. Technical photography needs technique. The use of clever ways to get the perfect picture. All that.
But what about if you want the photo? And that’s it. Nothing fancy. No tricks. Grab the shot - done.
There’s a lot of good in that. Think about it, faff about with composition? Or lighting? Miss the shot.
See it, shoot it. Don’t think.
Yeah, you could end up with a crap shot. But you could also end up with what you saw.
Result.
So before you spend thousands on a fancy camera, try this. Wander out with the one already in your pocket.
Yep, your smartphone.
I know.
It’s not a proper camera.
You don’t have proper control.
Well, it’s not about technical stuff. It’s about photos. Go out and take ‘em. Have fun.
I reckon you’ll get a surprise when the fun kicks in.
Take snaps. You won’t regret it.
Don’t think, shoot.
